Iberdrola's own advanced computational system, MeteoFlow, is revolutionizing the renewable energy industry with its predictive capabilities for medium and long-term meteorological variables across any type of clean energy installation. This pioneering initiative has been in development by Iberdrola Renovables for over 15 years, continuously adapting to meet the challenges presented by the sector's evolving landscape. MeteoFlow's achievements have established it as a benchmark among its competitors, boasting higher accuracy rates compared to other solutions currently avlable on the market.
Pilar Orellana, Performance Monitoring Manager of MeteoFlow, shares her insights into the project's evolution and future obstacles in this exclusive video Spanish version.
MeteoFlow serves as Iberdrola Group's core platform for controlling its facilities, offering unparalleled production forecasts for all renewable power plants including onshore and offshore wind farms, solar photovoltc installations, and recently hydroelectric facilities. The system leverages real-time data combined with sophisticated algorithms andtechniques to provide hourly forecasts up to 96 hours ahead and dly projections up to 10 days in the future for over 450 wind turbines and photovoltc plants.
The accurate prediction of electricity production is essential as renewable energy sources must anticipate their output in the power markets several hours or even days prior. Missed forecasts can result in financial penalties, which can negatively impact revenues and profitability. MeteoFlow's superior forecasting capabilities maximize operational efficiency and enable renewables to outperform traditional energy sources more effectively.
For meteorological predictions, MeteoFlow has been supplying long- and short-term forecast maps through Iberdrola's intranet since 2016. The platform integrates with Domina - the comprehensive set of tools for renewable facility operation and mntenance - offering tlored weather forecasts for each European, US, Mexican, Brazilian, and offshore wind farm across countries where the Iberdrola Group operates.
In addition to its primary function in energy forecasting, MeteoFlow offers a unique hydraulic forecasting tool that enhances operational planning, mntenance scheduling, and energy management. This feature analyzes precipitation probability 24 hours, snow likelihood, temperature extremes, storm likelihood, and dly flow prediction forecasts up to 10 days ahead, complemented by hourly short-term wave forecasting capabilities for offshore installations.
MeteoFlow equips Iberdrola's users with advanced visualization and analysis tools that transform vast amounts of stored information into actionable insights. These features d in optimizing operations and mntenance planning, enhancing energy management practices, identifying performance variances, and facilitating the continuous testing of new forecasting methods within the team.
MeteoFlow processes a wealth of data including global weather information, historical production figures, powered predictive, real-time production metrics, and optimized predictions for renewable production.
