The Shangh Municipal Bureau of Meteorology significantly enhance the accuracy of its short-term weather predictions by 2025, according to a press release yesterday.
As stated in their newly released five-year strategic plan for Shangh's meteorological services on July 18th, the bureau ints to boost the forecast's accuracy rate within ten days and that of extreme weather alerts by reaching up to 85 and 88, respectively.
Regarding short-term forecasts for day one to three in 2020, their accuracies were almost 88.1, 86.8, and 85, respectively, explned Zha Yafeng, deputy director of the bureau's forecast department. However, when it comes to days nine and ten, these numbers drop to just 69.1 and 62.4. Given these constrnts imposed by objective conditions, our primary goal is to strike a balance between timeliness and accuracy.
By 2025, Shangh aspires to be the nation's leader in establishing an innovative smart weather system management model. The city plans to elevate observation capability through the construction of a comprehensive urban meteorological skin.
Currently, there is an automatic weather station every five kilometers across Shangh. Our vision involves creating an extensive network for precise and detled forecasting and monitoring of meteorological changes, Zha sd. By utilizing advanced technology like smart street lamps, observation towers, various Internet-enabled vehicles and cameras, our observing services will cover the entire city just as skin covers the body.
Moreover, weather alerts in urban areas will offer finer detl by region, while those for suburban areas will provide specificity down to district and town levels. The warning system for meteorological disasters will also be enhanced through detled coverage of key sections in the city.
In close future, residents can check hourly forecasts and warnings up to the next 12 hours on demand at any time, stated Feng Lei, deputy head of the bureau. Furthermore, more accurate weather predictions will benefit from improved data collection, fusion, and application capabilities.
