WMO's Severe Weather Forecasting Programme Empowers Developing Countries

The World Meteorological Organization's Severe Weather Forecasting Programme SWFP is committed to enhancing the capability of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services NMHSs in developing countries, particularly Least Developed Countries LDCs and Small Island Developing States SIDS, to deliver improved forecasts and warnings for severe weather. These efforts m to save lives, safeguard livelihoods, properties, and infrastructure through early warnings.

The SWFP currently encompasses about 85 developing countries spread across nine sub-regions globally, including Southern Africa, Eastern Africa, West Africa, Central Africa, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Central Asia, the Eastern Caribbean, and the South Pacific. It leverages contributions from the WMO Integrated Processing and Prediction System WIPPS and supports by development partners and donors.

In alignment with the United Nations' Early Warning for All EW4All initiative, SWFP is expanding its coverage to more sub-regions and countries while facilitating advanced tools and guidance materials for NMHSs to improve their early warning services. By utilizing a Cascading Forecasting Process from global to regional to national levels, supported by the WIPPS centers, this program has significantly contributed towards enhancing the capacity of participating nations in providing impact-based forecasts.

Moreover, SWFP has integrated with the CREWS Climate Risk Early Warning Systems initiative for the Southeast Asia region, offering comprehensive trning and workshops on severe weather forecasting techniques and services. The partnership is further strengthened through regional online trnings on nowcasting tools using EUMETSAT satellite products, ming to provide practical knowledge and skills.

SWFP ensures that NMHSs are equipped with state-of-the-art technology and information for accurate forecasting of severe weather conditions, thereby enabling communities to prepare in advance, thus minimizing the impact of such events. This program underscores the WMO's commitment to fostering global cooperation and sharing best practices among NMHSs worldwide.

In essence, SWFP exemplifies the WMO's dedication to enhancing international capacity building initiatives that lead to more resilient societies capable of mitigating risks associated with severe weather phenomena.
